Rethink...

The Nine Most Challenging Questions of Deconstructing Your Spirituality and Faith

Click on the "+" beside any question for a brief summary of the topic. You have permission to rethink what you've been taught!

Rethinking Spirituality: Am I Still a Christian? Will God be mad if I deconstruct my beliefs?

Not only is it OK to rethink your beliefs, the Bible actually commands it. Pastor Paul shows how Bible passages like Romans 12:2 command us to always be challenging our beliefs for the renewing of our minds. It's how we can rightly discern what is good and right in a season of time.

Rethinking the Divine: Do I have to believe in a personhood of God & the Trinity as I was told to believe?

Even the Judeo-Christian Bible tells us God is different than the judgmental, easily offendable, old man sitting on a throne in heaven. Learning a new way to consider “God,” or the concept of the Divine, can change how we see ourselves, as well.

Rethinking the Bible: Does it really say what evangelicals claim?

Reading the Bible through a fundamentalist belief system inherently leads to bad interpretation and bad theology. Pastor Paul shows how one can understand the Bible differently by understanding its compilation and historical and cultural context.

Fundies might call us heretics for thinking this way, but the Spirit of Heaven will not.

Rethinking Eternity: Did God have to beat the hell out of Jesus to save us?

It may surprise many to know that there is less biblical support for the idea of an eternally tormenting hell than other beliefs about eternity. Pastor Paul shows how evangelical beliefs about hell are not only bad theology, but are dangerous for the mental well-being of people, particularly children.

Rethinking Culture Wars: Is God really a Republican when it comes to race, abortion, LGBTQ+, religious exclusivity & Christian Nationalism?

The religious leaders who drew so much ire from Jesus believed their country should be “made great again” in order for God’s plan to exist on earth. Pastor Paul says Jesus would certainly be turning over tables in our temples today.

Evangelicals are driven to partner with the political right by the issues of abortion & gay marriage, but Pastor Paul shows how the Bible is actually silent on abortion and not homophobic, and Jesus wouldn't fight rightwing culture wars at all

Rethinking Civil Engagement: Perhaps divine love includes justice, the welfare of people and good government, just not partisan politics & religion?

While Jesus refused to participate in the political arguments of his religious system, he did bring a radical view of how people should be governed. How can God hate government, as Evangelicals believe, if the book of Isaiah says the government would rest on his shoulders and never experience a lack of increase?

Rethinking Relationships: Can My Church, Family & Friends Be Wrong? Or am I bad for setting boundaries?

Losing community reputation and even family can be difficult, but Jesus seemed to know how to build boundaries against bad beliefs. The church has a long history of being wrong. It's not even the slightest bit unlikely it has it wrong again today

Rethinking Community: Do I have to attend a church that endangers my emotional & spiritual well-being?

The greek word "Sozo" is often translated as "Saved" and is used by Evangelicals to represent the saying of a "magic prayer" that will take us to heaven forever. But sozo actually means something much more broad - and much more earthly and human - than making an eternal choice of residence. Learning you matter and learning true identity matters to the Spirit of Heaven.

Rethinking Faith: Bringing 1st century spirituality into the 21st century

We’re leaving behind what we’ve known.  So what happens now? Can I still have faith while no longer attending my church? How do we pursue a 21st century spiritual life…together?

Bonus Question: How do we make safe community for those rethinking faith and spirituality?
